THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28: The first meeting of the year for the Newton-le-Willows Gardeners Association will be held at Newton Sports and Cricket Club on Crow Lane East. The speaker will be David Metcalfe, a member of the National Vegetable Society, who will give a talk entitled ‘Vegetables: My Way.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28: The next meeting of the Sankey Canal Restoration Society is at St Patrick’s Parish Centre, Marian Avenue, Earlestown, from 7.30pm. Learn about the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal Society’s new Meccano bridge.

FRIDAY, MARCH 1: Billinge pub the Eagle and Child is holding an 80s themed live music night on March 1, raising funds for PANC (The Protection of Animals from Neglect and Cruelty). Tickets priced £3 on the door.

SATURDAY, MARCH 2: The Helen Marie Charity will hold a coffee morning at Rainford Parish Hall. Admission costs 50p and there will be stalls and much more. All proceeds go to local poorly and disabled children.

SATURDAY, MARCH 2 AND 3: The annual Rainhill Model Railway Club’s annual exhibition takes place at Rainhill Village Hall between 10am and 5pm on Saturday and 10am to 4.30pm on Sunday. There will be a host of different layouts and scale models.

SUNDAY, MARCH 3: The St Helens Sinfonietta presents a concert with a difference at the St Helens Theatre Royal on from at 2pm. Tickets £6 for adults £3 for under 16’s from the box office. The programme is varied and should suit all ages but the main objective is to engage the young people and foster an interest in classical music.

MONDAY, MARCH 11: Queen’s Park Local History Group meets on the second Monday of the month in the lounge of the Sprayhurst Social Club, Boundary Road. The speaker Joe Cowley will be talking on the history of window glass.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13: The next members meeting of St Helens branch of CAMRA (Campaign for real ale) is a visit to George Wright Brewery in Rainford.

SATURDAY MARCH 23: Soul star Kenny Thomas performs live in St Helens the Function Rooms, North Road, St Helens, performing his classic hits including Outstanding. Tickets are available from 07918 600585 or pick up from Birchley St Mary’s Soul Nights (Billinge) on Friday March 8. Tickets cost £20.
