For generations Legh Vale Primary has served the community distinction - now it is the centre of attention itself after celebrating its 40th birthday.

The Haydock school began life in relatively humble surroundings with meagre facilities for its small number of pupils.

Today it is a thriving centre of excellence with a pupil roll of almost 600 students.

Now former staff, governors and pupils have joined their present-day counterparts to celebrate the Leigh Road school’s anniversary.

And while thousands of students have come and gone, when it comes to school leadership, stability is definitely the name of the game.

Andy Howard is only the third person to occupy the head teacher’s chair while chair of governors Dennis Marsh has held his post since the school’s first day!

“We haven’t seen a lot of leadership movement here,” said Mr Howard, “but I think that continuity has helped.”
