MUSIC fans will travel back in time to the era of New Wave, New Romantics and time-travelling DeLoreans with an 1980s night combining a night at the horse-racing with top tunes.

Haydock Park Racecourse will open its 2013 programme of summer music and racing events with Legends of the ‘80s, a four-act line up bearing a distinctly North West emphasis, including a chart-topping singer who grew up just a few furlongs from the racecourse.

Rick Astley, who was born in Newton-le-Willows and had a number one single in 17 countries with Never Gonna Give You Up, will return to Haydock after previously performing at the course in 2011.

He will be joined by former Soft Cell frontman Marc Almond, whose smash-hit single Tainted Love is one of the most recognisable tunes of the era and who continues to perform regularly as a solo artist.

Southport-born Marc also has a strong Wigan connection, as his group’s most famous single started out in life as a record on the Northern Soul scene made famous by the iconic Casino.

Also on the line-up is Paul Young, who became an ‘80s pop idol with songs such as Love of the Common People, Wherever I Lay My Hat and Every Time You Go Away, and New Wave band ABC, who continue to tour the world after originally shooting to success with singles like Tears Are Not Enough and debut album Lexicon of Love.

The ‘80s night kickstarts what promises to be an exciting summer of sounds for music enthusiasts and horse-racing fans alike, with ska legends Madness performing at Haydock in July and the season closing with a line-up still to be confirmed in August.

John Baker, regional director of Jockey Club Racecourses, said: “Haydock Park’s series of Saturday music nights after racing has got better year after year, and the crowds keep returning in ever bigger numbers.

“With Madness already confirmed for July, we are delighted to welcome an array of household name artists for our ‘80s night in June. It is going to be a fantastic evening of horse racing and music,”

Legends of the ‘80s will take place at Haydock Park racecourse on Sunday, June 22.

Tickets, which include entry to both the horse racing and concerts, are £60 for adults and £30 for children in the Premier Enclosure, £45 and £23 in the County Stand, and £30 and £15 in the Tattersalls and Newton enclosures.
