Plaque remembers top teacher

Old Holy Cross Primary School photo.

Old Holy Cross Primary School photo.

THESE bright-eyed pupils were snapped at Holy Cross Primary School in 1952.

Pictured with arms folded and sitting at “attention”, they will now be at bus pass and pension book age. Among those pictured are Joan Murphy and Teresa Rush.

In the background is outstanding teacher Alma Whittle, whose dedication to the three r’s as mistress of the 11-plus scholarship class saw her guide innumerable students to further education at West Park and Notre Dame grammar schools.

The sister of retired local journalist Denis Whittle, she was worthy of the headship but was not appointed due to cancer - which resulted in her death in 1980 at the age of 58.

A plaque dedicated to her memory in the school hall by Canon John Pennington remains at the Charles Street school to this day.
