The 16th St Helens, St Thomas Scout Group, were in desperate need of new, lightweight camping equipment which could be put up and used by all its young members.

But quality camping equipment doesn’t come cheap and the leaders sent out an SOS in a bid to secure the cash they needed in time for the annual Wingding Cub camp at Tawd Vale camp site.

Luckily, the group was awarded the full grant they applied for and are now the proud owners of new tents, ground sheets, shelters, tables, benches, stoves and camping lanterns.

Assistant cub scout leader Sarah Pye said: “We knew there was funding out there somewhere, but we didn’t know how to apply for it. Luckily, a scout leader from another group had written an article about how they obtained Lottery funding and gave useful information on how to apply.

“So, in February, we made an application to the Big Lottery Fund for an Awards For All grant and our project name was 16th Wild at Wingding!

“Our Cubs were the first to benefit from the equipment at the Merseyside County Wingding camp and, despite the rain and mud, they all kept as dry as possible - thanks to the new tents and shelters.”

She added: “We were delighted to receive the funding. It will make a massive difference to our group.

“We will now be able to provide a fuller outdoor programme to all our members and we are already starting to plan our next camp!”
