WINNERS of St Helens Council’s creative writing competition were delighted to collect their trophies and certificates from Mayor of St Helens, Councillor Tom Hargreaves.

This year’s competition, sponsored by Dave Lane Trophies and the Rotary Club of Newton-le-Willows, attracted a record 170 entries.

In the under 12s category, Sam McLellan was judged the winner, with Sian Grace Phillips the runner-up.

In the 12-16s section Lauryn Fitzgerald took the top prize with Michael Briers second and in the 17-plus category Margaret Noone was adjudged the winner, with Karen E Wright the runner-up.

In the community category, Marie Leyland took the top prize, with Josephine Ferguson the runner-up.

Winners in each section received a trophy, certificate and £50 in vouchers. Runners up in each section received a trophy, certificate and £25 in vouchers.
