The Citadel definitely suited Edgar Jones' style.
Edgar Jones and the Joneses
The Citadel
Thursday, March 20

As the bass reverberated round the intimate venue it felt like this band were made to play at our local arts centre.

A packed but very appreciative crowd started the evening holding t
heir glasses and nodding. By the end the electricity created by this soul, blues and jazz band had captivated the audience.

The head-nodding had gone and it had been replaced by hundreds of darkened figures jiving away to tunes like Is it Any Wonder.

How does one describe their music? With great difficulty. It is a mix of heady and sometimes dirty soul with a twist of funk, a sudden burst of jazz and then the underlying blues tunes take the stage.

A cracking performance by Edgar Jones and the Joneses who left amidst an encore of foot stamping and screams of more. They soon returned and kept us all going for another two songs.

Like a sudden fix, when they finally left the stage the crowd seemed bewildered wondering where their next shot was going to come from.

They are going to have to wait a while as Edgar Jones and his band are currently touring Japan enticing the Far Eastern popworld with tunes like I'm Gonna Miss You When You're Gone. A song, when sung by Mr Jones gives goosebumps only like Louis Armstrong could hope to achieve.

Their most recent album, Soothing Music For Stray Cats, won a Mercury Music Prize nomination and with Noel Gallagher giving them his sage nod of approval it is hard not to see this band going far.
