IT'S has been a whirlwind two years for rising comedy star Dave Twentyman.
Two years ago, the 27-year-old was a relatively unknown stand-up piling his trade in small clubs across the borough. Today, the funnyman – real name Dave Jones – is a much sought after headline act who has appeared at big name clubs across Britain and is hotly-tipped as the next big thing.
Fans include Friday Night Project star Alan Carr.
But Dave is the first to credit the St Helens Reporter's role in helping launch his blooming career. Two years ago, he was the first winner of our Barrel of Laughs competition, and he hasn't looked back since.
He says: "It was a massive boost to my confidence. To be told you're the best in St Helens was incredible, although there is always Johnny Vegas."
Dave – who married in September, and he and wife Sue celebrated the birth of their first child Olivia – visited our Claughton Street office as he prepares for his latest assault on comedy superstardom.
He says he is still good mates with his Barrel of Laughs compere and St Helens' leading comedy impresario Dave Turquoise, despite the latter's change of career direction.
He reveals: "Dave has recently had himself ordained as a Reverend over one of those weird American websites. He's insisting we call him Rev Dave and even wants me to let him conduct Olivia's Christening. I'm interested but Sue would never let him."
Dave still works full time as a street light inspector in deepest, darkest rural Lancashire.
"It is an unusual job, but someone has to do it," he jokes.
"I'm hoping I will be able to go full time with the comedy thing, but obviously, now I have a family and looking after them has to come first."
While his family and friends are supportive, Dave insists they are far from star struck by his success.
"They don't really acknowledge it," he says. "It's like, 'so, have you been on the radio again?'. And that's it, it doesn't go any further than that. If I'm honest I think they'd prefer it if I got a proper job.
"My mates are the same. If I say something funny down the pub, they'll accuse me of using them as guinea pigs for my stand-up routine. So I can't win, really."
Perhaps this explains Dave's admission he'd readily shun the Johnny Vegas approach to hitting the big time.
He laughs: "Johnny still lives in St Helens. If I hit the big time, I'd be off. I'd buy a big house in somewhere posh like Burscough, and live next door to Alan Kennedy."
l Dave Twentyman appears regularly on Michelle Mullane's weekend radio show on Xfm.
