Geraint Thomas has lost his grip on the best young rider jersey following a brutal first day in the mountains.
The Welshman, who lived and trains in St Helens during the cycling off-season, was poised to claim the race lead after going into Saturday's stage in second place, 20 seconds behind Fabian Cancellara.

He managed to keep with the main group for the majority of the stage but a mechanical problem saw him drop off the back of the peleton, eventually finishing four minutes behind the main pack.

Thomas will now revert to his role as a support rider to Bradley Wiggins.

Despite his disappointment, the Team Sky ace has been one of the revelations of the opening week of the Tour, with several pundits tipping him as a potential future contender for the main prize.
