The Batala beat

HAIRDRESSING students at Knowsley Community College (below) drummed up a new skill when they were treated to a Batala Samba Drum workshop.

Tutor Michelle Beswick, who took up Batala as a hobby, also swapped her scissors for drumsticks after organising the musical workshop.

Batala Liverpool is part of a world-wide network of bands playing Brazilian Samba Reggae rhythms, inspired from the music’s roots in Bahia in north-eastern Brazil.

Michelle said: “I wanted to do something different to inspire and motivate the students away from the salon. Batala is such fun and we all had a great morning learning rhythms and playing as loud as we could!”

Batala is an example of one of the many enrichment activities organised for Knowsley Community College students. To find out more, go online at: www.knowsleycollege.ac.uk
