Market is open for business

THE brand new St Mary’s Market is open for business – with commanding views of the local countryside.

As part of a major overhaul, the town centre favourite now boasts supersized images of rural scenes – submitted by four local amateur photographers.

They were the winners of a council competition to help decorate the newly-refurbished market.

Nearly 300 images were submitted by more than 30 amateur photographers. But just four were picked to have their work on permanent display at the market.

They were:

* Brian Dobbs (two images) - of Lavender Farm in Rainford at sunset and poppies at sunset.

* David Lowton (three images) – of Sherdley Park during a shower, a yacht race at sunset and The Paddock in Autumn.

* John Gerrard (one image) – of a spring scene

* Stephen Evans (one image) - titled ‘The Water’s Eye’

Markets manager Kevin Gavin said: “There was a fantastic response with the submitted pictures showing what a depth of photographic talent there is out there on our doorstep.

“The images show some great scenes from around the borough and I’m sure that our customers at St Mary’s Market will love what they see.”

The photographs are being used to decorate the new café area within the market – providing a dramatic backdrop and leading to new areas specifically designed to host traditional and specialist markets as well as events and community activities.

The refurbished area of the market will be officially re-launched on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 June as part of the national ‘Love Your Market’ fortnight.

On 22 June there will be a farmers’ market event with a young entrepreneurs’ market scheduled for the following day.
