Helping to stay safe on the town’s roads
YOUNGSTERS from across St Helens are taking part in a project to help keep their peers safe on the borough’s roads.
So far 22 primary schools have appointed their own year six junior road safety officers, assisted by deputies from year five.
Helped by members of St Helens Council’s Traffic, Road Safety and Travel Awareness team, the youngsters highlight road safety issues to fellow pupils.
Using school noticeboards, assemblies and competitions, the JRSOs create and maintain awareness of potential hazards and promote safer behaviour on the roads.
And last week St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, Councillor Alison Bacon, helped celebrate their commitment and enthusiasm by hosting a celebration event at St Helens Town Hall.
Assisted by the council’s Director of Environmental Protection, Paul Sanderson, and Saints mascot Boots Councillor Bacon presented certificates and trophies to the JRSOs.
She said: “The JRSO scheme has been set up so the children themselves can pass on serious road safety messages to their fellow pupils, teachers and parents in a fun way - and I’m delighted that this scheme is up and running at so many local schools.
“With more than 29 children killed or injured on UK roads every week, road safety is a vitally important issue for every school pupil, so we’re delighted that we’ve found a way of involving the children themselves in spreading the word about safety.”
